What Are At-Large City Councilors?
The November 7th election will select both At-Large and District Councilors.
The Boston City Council has 9 District Councilors and 4 At-Large Councilors, all of whom have the same legislative and voting powers, but may perceive their roles and who they represent differently.
District City Councilors are elected by the residents of a single area of Boston, known as a District. The District boundaries are updated every 10 years, after the decennial census — and this upcoming 2023 Election will be the first to use the new District Map adopted after the latest redistricting.
In contrast, At-Large City Councilors are elected by the whole city.
Because there are 4 At-Large City Council seats, you may vote for up to 4 candidates. At-Large and District Councilors are on the same ballot, but voted for separately.
